The Importance Of Nighttime Oral Hygiene | The Dacula Dentist

When most of us reach the end of a long day, the last thing on our mind is our oral hygiene. Nighttime oral care is very important though. While we are asleep, we don’t swallow so potentially harmful bacteria can build up throughout the night. The best defense is a good offense, meaning make sure the bacteria don’t have anything to feed off of.

Before hitting the sack, be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly and floss. Brushing your teeth will help to protect your teeth from plaque build up and tooth decay. If you are at risk for cavities and/or gum disease, you may want to brush after dinner as well as before bed.

Flossing is important as well. You don’t want to go to sleep with food in between your teeth. Cleaning between teeth allows you to get to plaque that won’t be removed from brushing alone. Removing plaque before it hardens and becomes tartar is very important to good dental health.

You may want to finish your nightly oral care with a good therapeutic mouthwash. This can give you additional defense against plaque, tooth decay and bad breath.

Having a consistent nighttime oral care routine can truly make a positive impact on your overall dental health. Our patient’s dental health is a top priority at our dental office. We offer complete dental services, including dental exams and x-rays. Feel free to contact us with questions on proper oral hygiene or to schedule an appointment.
