Dental Care During Pregnancy | The Dacula Dentist

Many people don’t know that pregnancy actually makes your teeth and gums more susceptible to plaque buildup, gingivitis and infections.  So it is of great importance to pay close attention to caring for your teeth and gums during this sensitive time.

Research has shown that pregnant women were more likely have bleeding gums when compared to non-pregnant women.  Research also shows that hormonal changes during pregnancy make the mom-to-be more susceptible to gingivitis. There was also a correlation between a woman having periodontitis during pregnancy and an increased risk of preeclampsia during delivery.

To help ensure your dental health during pregnancy, be sure to brush two-three times daily, floss daily and see your dentist once per trimester so they can catch any potential problems early.  Mommy and babies health are tied together in so many ways and dental health is no exception.

If you have additional questions on keeping your teeth healthy during pregnancy, feel free to contact us. Your dental health is our priority.  We want to be your dentist!

Holiday Dental Care For Kids | The Dacula Dentist

Let’s face it. One of the things our children love most about the holidays is the treats. The candy canes, cakes, peppermints and cookies keep them smiling all season long. All these treats can be hard on their teeth though. Tooth decay is the most common dental problem seen in children. So how can we help them protect their tiny teeth during the holidays? Here are a few tips that may help you prevent your child from damaging their teeth during the holidays:

LOOK FOR TREATS THAT HAVE LESS SUGAR: The more sugar, the higher the risk of tooth decay. Try to test out tasty treats that have less or no sugar, including nuts, dark chocolate and exotic fruits. If you get create and introduce these treats in fun and holiday themed ways, you may be surprised at how responsive your little one may be.

SAVE TREATS UNTIL AFTER DINNER: Make sure your child has a full meal, including a pre-dinner salad before offering them a holiday sweet. They will have much less room in their stomachs to over indulge on them after a complete dinner.

HAVE THEM BRUSH AND FLOSS AFTER A TREAT: Make it a requirement for future treats that they floss and brush after they have candy or sweets. It helps them build up a long term healthy habit and will reduce the decaying effects that the sugar can have on their teeth.

KEEP THE CANDY OUT OF REACH: Put fake candy canes on the tree and holiday candy out of their reach. If you leave it accessible to your kids, they will surely take advantage and over indulge.

Although it may not be easy to cut back on the holiday treats for your little ones, it is important to protect their teeth all year long. Their holiday break from school is also a great time to schedule a dental exam and cleaning as well. Be sure that their dentist reinforces the same healthy habits that you are promoting at home. If you have more questions on keeping your children’s teeth healthy, call us today. We want to be your dentist!

Reduce Teeth Sensitivity | The Dacula Dentist

Does the thought of biting into an ice cream cone or ice cube make your cringe? If it does, then you probably have sensitive teeth. It can be so uncomfortable just eating or drinking everyday things when your teeth are hypersensitive. You may even be bothered by brushing or flossing. Luckily there are some things you can do to help ease the pain. Here are a few tips for dealing with teeth sensitivity:

BRUSH GENTLY WITH A SOFT BRISTLE TOOTHBRUSH – If you brush to aggressively and use hard bristled toothbrushes, you may be wearing down your teeth’s protective layers. When that protection is depleted temperature extremes, pressure or acidic foods can really cause a lot of discomfort.

REDUCE PLAQUE BUILD UP – Plaque buildup on teeth can actually wear down your protective enamel. Brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily are critical to reducing plaque buildup. You should also be visiting your dentist for a dental cleaning at least twice a year as well.

SKIP OR SWITCH THE MOUTHWASH – Many mouthwashes contain alcohol and other chemical compounds that can strip your tip of some of its natural protection. You may want to switch to a more gentle or natural mouthwash or stop using mouthwash all together.

These are just a few tips that may help you reduce your teeth’s sensitivity. We also recommend that you see your dentist and address this issue specifically. If you have more questions on teeth sensitivity, feel free to give us a call. We make dental health a priority and welcome you as a new patient.

Toothbrush Tips | The Dacula Dentist

Whether you are at Walmart, the grocery store or the local drug store, you will never be in short supply of finding a variety of different toothbrushes. But what do you look for? What is important? Toothbrushes are found in variety of styles, colors and softness. Sometimes we can tend to over think the whole toothbrush selection process. Two of the main things to consider are dental health and brushing comfort.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing a toothbrush:
• Choose a toothbrush that is on the softer side of the spectrum unless recommended otherwise by your dentist.

• Select the size of the brush and head based on the size of your hands and mouth.

• If you tend to not brush as long or as thoroughly as you should, you may want to consider an electronic toothbrush .

• Make sure your toothbrush is ADA approved.

The tips below will help guide your daily brushing (which is most important of all):
• You should regularly brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and at night.

• Make sure not to brush your teeth too roughly to assure your gums don’t get damaged. When brushing use a gentle motion.

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste to avoid severe tooth decay.

• Brush your tongue for a minimal time of 30 seconds to fight off spreading germs that can cause bad breath.

If you need further assistance more information on selecting a toothbrush or brushing your teeth, contact us. We pride ourselves on our patient’s dental health and education. One single toothbrush by itself; can’t support the multiple needs to keep a healthy a mouth so we encourage you to floss daily and to see a dentist regularly.

Proper Cleaning & Care For Dentures | The Dacula Dentist

If you wear dentures, it can be challenging to keep them clean, odor free and comfortable. Dentures are an expensive and important investment, so here are some tips to clean and care for your dentures:

Cleaning Dentures
1. Clean the plaque buildup on your dentures every day using a denture brush and by soaking them in denture cleanser (do not use toothpaste on your dentures).

2. Clean your dentures over water or a soft surface to avoid damaging them just in case they are dropped.

3. After eating, thoroughly rinse your dentures to wash away leftover food particles.

4. When cleaning your dentures with a denture brush, use gentle strokes and clean, warm water to avoid damaging the surface of your dentures.

You should still visit your dentist regularly even if you have full dentures. Your dentist can offer tips and guidelines for taking proper care of your dentures and gums. It is commonplace that dentures have to be replaced every 5 – 10 years as the mouth changes over time. A refitting is recommended every 2-3 years to reline the dentures. Your dentist can help you determine the right time for you to refit and/or replace your dentures.

We offer full and partial dentures and denture care at our office. We want you to feel comfortable in your dentures and can help you ensure that they stay clean and white. If you have questions on getting dentures or denture care, contact us today. Feel free to contact us to schedule an appointment. We want to be your dentist!

Does Genetics or Dental Care Determine Our Teeth’s Fate? | The Dacula Dentist

In short, dental care is the dominant factor in the health of your gums and teeth. Still, that is not to say that genetics doesn’t also play a role. From birth, our mouth fills with a network of microorganisms which will forever impact or dental health. The level of influence that genetics play toward the role of these microorganisms is still largely unknown. Our commitment to fully understand this role in greater detail would significantly improve our ability to initiate effective prevention and treatment plans in the future.

Recent research has found though that there is a basic foundation of bacteria present in all humans. Ken Krauter, senior author of the study, asserts that there is a very high degree of commonality in the microbial species found in all human mouths. The more that can be learned about these microbial communities, the more equipped we will be at understanding and preventing their potentially harmful effects.

So our main focus with patients must be care at this point. Proper brushing at least two times a day, flossing daily, annual dental x-rays and bi-annual dental exams are what is going to make the biggest impact on your long term oral health. Also, starting young is important. Even toddlers should regularly see their dentist and receive proper dental hygiene daily. The dental care we put forth makes a tremendous difference in the health of our teeth and gums.

We understand the importance of proper dental care and make that a priority at our dental office. If you have questions on dental hygiene or care, contact us today. Feel free to contact us with any other questions as well or to schedule an appointment. We want to be your dentist!

Proper Diet To Promote Healthy Teeth | The Dacula Dentist

Healthy teeth and gums are the foundation to great dental health. Diet can significantly impact your oral health. These are a few dietary recommendations to prevent tooth decay & gum disease, while promoting dental health.

Drinking Black Tea – Many of us like to start our day with coffee, but black tea may be an alternative you would like to try. Studies at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry have shown that compounds in black tea can help reduce unhealthy bacteria that  lead to cavities and gum disease.

Get Enough Calcium – Since we were kids, we have always been told that, “milk does a body good”. It also does your teeth a world of good. Calcium, especially in children, promotes strong teeth. According to the Journal of Periodontology, failing to meet your daily calcium requirements greatly increases your risk of developing gum disease.

Consume Vitamin C – A study conducted at the State University of NY at Buffalo indicates a direct connection between contracting gingivitis and not getting the recommended amount of daily Vitamin C. Vitamin C plays a crucial role in your bodies’ ability to fight infection and improve its overall health. Eating foods high in Vitamin C is your best option to make sure your are getting enough daily. If that isn’t possible, then you may want to consider supplements.

Drink More Water – Water is vital to our bodies and oral health. Replacing sugary and acidic drinks with fresh water can help prevent tooth decay and teeth staining. Water also assists in washing harmful bacteria and food particles away from your teeth.

Oral health is important to your overall health and well being. Choosing a balanced diet that promotes dental health can present long lasting benefits. Our office offers comprehensive dental care and makes dental health a top priority. Feel free to contact us with questions on dental health or to schedule an appointment.

Causes and Solutions for Yellowed Teeth | The Dacula Dentist

A bright, white smile is appealing to most everyone. Having a smile you feel confident in can boost self-esteem, improve your desire to socialize and help your overall appearance.   Yellowing teeth can be a source of embarrassment and negative self-image.  Here are some of the top causes and solutions for yellow teeth.

CAUSES:
Nature - Sometimes it’s just genetic. Some people have teeth that naturally have a yellowish tone in color.  The layer below our white enamel, dentin,  is yellow.  If your enamel is not well mineralized, it may become translucent and allow the yellow dentin to show through.
Aging - Teeth can often yellow with age.  As enamel wears thin and long term exposure to staining food and drink takes it toll, once white teeth can become yellowed.
Dental Hygiene – This is the most common cause of yellowing teeth.  Simply not caring for teeth properly with brushing, exams and cleanings can leave your smile lacking in brightness.

SOLUTIONS:
Toothpaste - Advances in effective whitening toothpastes have been pretty amazing. Choosing a reputable, well reviewed whitening toothpaste can make your smile noticeably whiter.  Ask your dentist to recommend a whitening toothpaste that is also good for protecting and cleaning your teeth as well.
Brushing & Flossing - Brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily will help to keep your mouth clean and lessen the staining effects of certain food and drinks.
Professional Whitening – Professional teeth whitening can often make your smile several shades whiter. Both take home and in office professional teeth whitening can offer long lasting improvements in making your smile white and bright.
We understand how important having a white and beautiful smile is.  Our office offers professional teeth whitening services to our patients that can make your smile much brighter and reduce any yellowing your teeth may have suffered.  Feel free to contact us with questions on cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening or to schedule an appointment.

The Importance Of Nighttime Oral Hygiene | The Dacula Dentist

When most of us reach the end of a long day, the last thing on our mind is our oral hygiene. Nighttime oral care is very important though. While we are asleep, we don’t swallow so potentially harmful bacteria can build up throughout the night. The best defense is a good offense, meaning make sure the bacteria don’t have anything to feed off of.

Before hitting the sack, be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly and floss. Brushing your teeth will help to protect your teeth from plaque build up and tooth decay. If you are at risk for cavities and/or gum disease, you may want to brush after dinner as well as before bed.

Flossing is important as well. You don’t want to go to sleep with food in between your teeth. Cleaning between teeth allows you to get to plaque that won’t be removed from brushing alone. Removing plaque before it hardens and becomes tartar is very important to good dental health.

You may want to finish your nightly oral care with a good therapeutic mouthwash. This can give you additional defense against plaque, tooth decay and bad breath.

Having a consistent nighttime oral care routine can truly make a positive impact on your overall dental health. Our patient’s dental health is a top priority at our dental office. We offer complete dental services, including dental exams and x-rays. Feel free to contact us with questions on proper oral hygiene or to schedule an appointment.

How To Choose The Right Dentist

It can be daunting to find just the right dentist for you and your family. There are so many factors to consider. The 3 C’s are critical factors that can help you make the right choose in selecting a dentist. The 3 C’s include: Care, Coverage and Convenience.

Care: The most important factor in choosing a dentist is the level of care you will receive. When determining whether or not a dentist will offer quality care, you should do your homework. Factors to consider are education, patient reviews, membership in the Academy of General Dentistry, professionalism, compassion and office amenities. Dentists who are members of the AGD must meet specific requirements for continuing education and standards of care. You have to put a significant amount of trust in your dentist so be sure they offer a superior level of dental care.

Coverage: Cost and insurance coverage cannot be overlooked when deciding on a dentist. Many dental procedures can be expensive and finding a dentist that is in-network if you have dental insurance can save you a significant amount of money. If you don’t have dental insurance, you may want to find a dental office that offers in-house payment plans for more expensive dental work.

Convenience: We are much more likely to see our dentist regularly if it is convenient to do so. Think about the factors most important to you, including, location, office hours, online appointment scheduling and rescheduling policies. You also want to find a dentist who can treat your entire family and is kid friendly if you have children. If your dentist is too far from home or is only open when you are at work, then you may put off seeing the dentist when you really shouldn’t.

We work hard to offer our patients the 3 C’s. Our dental patients can count on us for terrific dental care, comprehensive dental coverage and family convenience. We offer complete dental services, including dental exams and x-rays. Feel free to contact us with questions or to schedule an appointment.

Can Fish Oil Treat Gum Disease?

Periodontitis is a pervasive dental problem and dental professionals are always looking for ways to treat and prevent it. Dr. Alison Coates from the University of South Australia along with colleagues from the School of Dentistry at University of Adelaide in Australia reviewed evidence from eight unique studies.

"I would recommend that people ensure they have a sufficient intake of long chain omega-3 fatty acids in their diet for general health," said Coates. "In Australia, these types of fatty acids are considered to be essential with ~500 mg recommended as the suggested dietary target. This equates to approximately 2 fatty fish meals per week."

The group reports indicate that fish oil may be useful in reducing periodontal symptoms, but more strategic research is still needed. Currently a study is ongoing in Australia that is testing the effects of fish oil as a possible component for periodontitis treatment.

If you have more questions on periodontitis or gum disease contact us. We offer comprehensive dental exams and x-rays and can address all of your dental concerns. Call us to schedule an appointment.

What Is Your Toothache Telling You? | The Dacula Dentist

There’s not many things in life worse than a bad toothache. But the constant nagging pain is more than just an annoyance. Toothaches or tooth pain is caused when the nerve to a tooth becomes irritated. Toothaches are usually a sign of a more serious dental or medical issue and shouldn’t be ignored.

Common causes of toothaches are tooth decay, a cracked tooth, gum disease or an exposed root. Other causes may not even originate in the mouth at all, including heart disease or sinus problems. Simple activities like drinking or chewing may seriously aggravate a toothache. Even if you are able to treat your toothache effectively with over the counter pain medication, do not ignore the pain. The earlier you treat your toothache, the more likely you are to treat them with minimal cost and invasion. Through dental exams and x-rays, your dentist can help you determine the cause of your toothache and what the best treatment is.

If you are in Gwinnett and need a dentist that specializes in toothaches, give us a call. We offer free exams and x-rays to determine the cause of your toothache. Call us if you have questions to schedule an appointment.

Do Gums Suffer With Age? | The Dacula Dentist

We know there are lots of medical conditions and ailments that are associated with aging. Unfortunately gum disease is one of those conditions that become more prominent with old age. New research from Queen Mary, University of London in collaboration with research teams in the U.S. may be able to help explain why this is the case.

The study, published in Nature Immunology, explains that reduced levels of the chemical Del-1 in seniors are related to gum deterioration. Del-1 impacts the immune system, which in turns impacts your body’s ability to fight off gum disease. Making this connection can help researchers find possible treatments for preventing gum disease in seniors.

As people age they are more likely to suffer from many inflammatory diseases, including gum disease. The negative effects of gum disease can be pervasive and include tooth loss so increased research in this area is definitely a positive thing.

As a part of gum disease prevention, be sure to visit your dentist regularly for dental exams, x-rays and teeth cleanings. Our patient’s dental health is a top priority. Call us if you have questions or gum disease or if you would like to schedule an appointment.

Battling Gingivitis | The Dacula Dentist

The best way to beat gingivitis is early intervention. As with most diseases, catching it early can reduce the severity and long term negative effects, including root canals and losing teeth. If you are at increased risk for periodontitis, you may also be at even greater risk for gingivitis.

What Is Gingivitis?
Put simply, it’s the early stage of gum disease. You may notice swelling or redness in the gums. Your gums may also bleed easily. These symptoms may be very mild and may not alarm you. Even if you are not in pain, we recommend you schedule a dentist appointment so they can determine if intervention is necessary.

Risk Factors
Common risk factors for gingivitis are pregnancy, diabetes, cancer and HIV. Some research also has shown that some people may have a genetic disposition for developing gingivitis. You don’t have to have a risk factor though to suffer from gingivitis. Always watch for warning signs, even if you have no known medical problems.

Prevention & Intervention
Stick to the basics of good dental help to assist in preventing or intervening in gingivitis development, including biannual dental visits, daily flossing and brushing your teeth 2 to 3 times a day. Don’t hesitate to see your dentist if you experience any of the symptoms of gingivitis.

We put our patients dental health as a top priority. If you feel you may be at risk for gingivitis, please call us to schedule an appointment. We can discuss proper treatments for gingivitis and advice you on your overall dental health.

Most of us like to indulge in sweets and sugary drinks, at least once and while. We often don’t think about the effects these foods have on our teeth though. Eating the right foods can make a difference in your dental health. Here are a few foods that are great for your teeth and help prevent tooth decay.

Milk & Cheese
Milk and cheese are both rich in calcium. Calcium is great for preventing tooth decay, especially for developing kids.

Fruits & Vegetables
High fiber foods like fruits and vegetables assist in creating salivation, which in turn creates mineral defenses against tooth decay.

Whole Grain Bread
Whole grains foods are high in iron and B vitamins, both of which are great for maintaining healthy gums.

So passing up on junk food and sodas not only does your body good, but your teeth and gums too. Tooth decay is a serious issue and eating right can help improve your dental health. Making healthy food choices can help keep your smile beautiful and healthy.

Here at Kurz Family Dentisty we believe in patient education and helping our patients improve their dental health. If you have more questions on preventing tooth decay or would like to schedule a dental appointment, to contact us today.

The Difference Between Plaque & Tartar | The Dacula Dentist

Many dental patients think of plaque and tartar as two interchangeable terms, but they are not. They are two important terms to understand for good dental hygiene though. Controlling plaque and tartar can greatly improve your dental health.

Plaque is a sticky bacterium that forms invisibly on the surface of the teeth. Food, drinks and saliva work together to produce plaque, which is the main contributing factor in gum disease and cavities. To prevent plaque buildup, daily flossing and brushing at least 2 times a day is very important.

Tartar (aka calculus) is a more brittle deposit that can build up on teeth. Stains can become trapped underneath tartar which may lead to permanent discolorations of the teeth. Tartar forms such a tough bond, only a dental professional can properly remove it. To help prevent its growth, use toothpaste that contains pyrophosphate or a “tartar control” toothpaste. Also, be sure to visit your dentist every 6 months for a proper teeth cleaning.

We believe in educating and protecting our dental patients. Understanding the important of dental hygiene is very beneficial to your overall health. Feel free to contact us with any questions you have on keeping your teeth and gums healthy or to schedule a dental exam.

The Dangers Of Plaque Build Up | The Dacula Dentist

Plaque can be so stubborn, especially in those hard to reach areas, in particular the back teeth. All those handy grooves and ridges that make the back teeth perfect for chewing food also makes them hard to clean. As food particles collect on them, the risk of plaque and bacteria build up greatly increases. Bacteria can convert fermenting sugars into plaque in as little as 30 minutes. Removing plaque buildup is very important to your dental health. If left unchecked, this buildup can lead to gum disease.

Proper and regular flossing is crucial to plaque removal and keeping your teeth and gums healthy. As they say, practice makes perfect. Even if you struggle at first, keep at it and it will get easier to floss those back teeth over time. If you still find it very difficult to floss your back teeth, ask your dentist to take some extra time to show you and practice with you. You may also want to invest in an ADA approved electric flosser.

Protect your teeth and gums with daily flossing, brushing and regular dental exams and cleanings. Feel free to contact us with any questions you have on keeping your teeth and gums healthy or to schedule an exam.

Financing Dental Work | The Dacula Dentist

When you make your smile and dental health a priority, as you should, it can sometimes be an expensive endeavor. Most people can usually cover the costs of routine exams, x-rays and fillings, but some procedures, including veneers and dental implants, are much more costly and financing can be a great option to cover those costs.

Here are a few things to consider when you are thinking about financing dental work:

- Does your dentist offer in-house financing? If they do, this may be the best route to consider.

- Understand the entire cost of the procedure and request a line-by-line breakdown of the all the services involved.

- Contact your dental insurance to see what their coverage is for the procedure.

- Check your credit score. Find out if your credit score is high enough to qualify for most financing options.

- Research any financing companies that you are considering. Also consider such companies as Care Credit that specializes in financing dental procedures.

Your smile and dental health is important. Remember there are numerous options available for helping to cover the costs of more expensive dental procedures. Feel free to contact us with any questions you have on financing dental procedures.

How to Choose the Right Toothbrush | The Dacula Dentist

Lots of people just grab a toothbrush at the grocery store based on color or style and never really consider if it’s the right type of toothbrush for them. Using the right toothbrush is important for your long term dental health. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a toothbrush:

1. Soft bristles and a smaller head are best for getting rid of build up, residue and plaque from your teeth. They offer the comfort, flexibility and reach that you need.

2. An electric toothbrush is a great alternative to ensure that your teeth are thoroughly cleaned every time you brush.

3. Nonslip handles are a great feature as well. It can help you better reach tough areas of your mouth and help you keep a solid grip on your brush.

4. Look for the ADA (American Dental Association) seal of approval on the packaging.

Taking good care of your teeth is so important. Brush at least twice a day with a quality toothbrush that you replace regularly. If you want to learn more about dental health and proper brushing, contact Kurz Family Dentistry today. We are your Dacula dentist and experts in perfecting your smile!

Safety Concerns With Mercury Fillings

When we speak of “Going Green,” we often reference saving the environment, but how does that connect with the world of dentistry?

Did you know that amalgam is the most commonly used filling material throughout the world? It is an alloy made of 50% Silver and 50% Mercury and has been used as a filling material since 1816. While dentists for a long time used amalgam as dental fillings, in recent years, it has been discovered that this black/silver substance is actually harmful to one's health and could lead to toxicity-related illnesses. The most at risk are children and lactating or pregnant women.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Silver Amalgam Fillings?

•They can be dark and unsightly.

•As they age, the edges of the fillings undergo metal fatigue and begin to break down.

•When fillings break, they no longer seal the tooth; this may allow cavities to start again.

•Silver fillings just fill holes, they do not add strength to teeth (bonded fillings add strength).

•Silver fillings absorb water and expand as they age, so the tooth may break.

•The metal in silver fillings causes unsightly stains of the teeth and the gums.

•Undercuts or pins have to be placed in a tooth to mechanically hold the filling in the tooth; this weakens the tooth and can accelerate cracking.

What does 'mercury-safe' mean for “Going Green”?
Patients request removal of their mercury amalgam fillings for two main reasons:

· They want to have better-looking teeth - a cosmetic makeover.

· They have been referred by a health professional.

Some dentists offer the options of amalgam or mercury free which is always a good selling point for clients! If you are looking for mercury-free fillings or having poisonous dental amalgam fillings removed, aim to find a dental clinic that has expertise and experience in how to perform this type of dental work safely. Because of the toxic nature of mercury and the proximity of the mouth to the brain, it is critical to remove mercury amalgam fillings using safe protocols. New strong filling materials have been invented and new dental equipment like dental water lasers and air abrasion, make it possible to make mercury (silver) fillings redundant.

We recommended that you do your own research and reading before choosing a dentist. Our dental practice can provide you with a wide selection that includes ceramics, composites and other mercury-free material.

If you want to learn more about dental health or safe mercury amalgam removal protocols, contact Kurz Family Dentistry today. We are your Dacula dentist and experts in perfecting your smile!

Fight Bad Breath Naturally | Dacula Dentist

Bad breath, or halitosis, can really put a damper on your social life and confidence. More importantly though, bad breath can be an early sign of health or dental issues, including cavities/tooth decay, gum disease and liver problems. Most people treat their bad breath with mouthwash, mints or gum. These may not be the best or safest ways to treat bad breath long term. They may mask your bad breath, but often contain toxic ingredients that can induce infections that may lead to chronic halitosis.

Here are a few natural remedies for bad breath you may want to try:

1. Have a purified water source. This will help cleanse and neutralize the mouth properly.

2. Eat fennel seeds, dill and mint which alkalize saliva reducing bacteria growth.

3. Create your own natural mouthwash using steeped fresh cloves and purified warm water.

If you want to learn more about dental health or remedies for bad breath, contact Kurz Family Dentistry today. We strive to be a Dacula dentist that informs and cares for every patient.

3 Tips To Maximizing Your Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is a great benefit and getting the most out of it for the least amount of money makes it even better. Here are a few tips to help you maximize your dental insurance and also take optimal care of your teeth.

Tip 1 – Stay in network. A quick visit to your insurance provider’s website should supply you with local dentists that are considered in network. This can provide you with significant savings because in network providers can only charge you up to a certain amount that is determined by your insurance company for covered services. With out of network providers, you may be responsible to coverage part of the charges for many dental procedures.

Tip 2 – Communicate with your insurance provider. Don’t hesitate to contact your provider to ask specific questions about your coverage, claims or anything else you are unsure on. Read through the written materials available to you online or in your benefits booklet. Also, never be afraid to dispute charges that you think are incorrect. Many times they are wrong and you can simply have the insurance company correct the error and pay your claim.

Tip 3 - Understand your maximum benefits. Many people aren’t aware that they have yearly limitations to the amount their dental insurance will cover each year. If you know you are planning to have extensive, expensive dental work done, be sure that you have enough coverage left to cover the procedure or you may want to modify your appointment accordingly.

If you have more questions on dental insurance or to find out if you are in network with us, just give us a call. We would love to be your dentist!

Does Age Impact The Risk Of Developing Gum Disease?

Based on research conducted at The University of London in collaboration with research groups in the USA, it seems that gum disease may become more prevalent with old age. The study found a relationship between a decrease in the level of a chemical called Del-1 that often occurs in old age. This decrease in Del-1 affects the body's immune system negatively.

As a result of a weakened immune system, older people have an increased risk of gum disease as well as other inflammatory diseases, including gum disease. When they treated the gums of the mice with Del-1, the number of white blood cells dropped, and gum disease and bone loss were reduced. Understanding the relationship between Del-1 and gum disease can aid researchers in finding effective treatments for the problem in older adults.

Do Sports Drinks Damage Your Teeth?

A recent study that was featured in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, outlined a startling relationship between an increase in drinking sports and energy drinks, especially among adolescents, and irreversible damage to teeth. This relationship was even more prominent when there were high acidity levels in the drinks, which can erode tooth enamel.

The researchers found evidence of damage to tooth enamel after as little as five days of exposure to sports or energy drinks, although energy drinks showed a much higher potential to damage teeth than sports drinks. Energy drinks appeared to cause almost twice the damage to teeth as sports drinks did. After reviewing this data, they recommend that patients not brush their teeth within an hour of drinking sports and energy drink. Brushing may potentially increase the erosion process.

So the next time you reach for that energy drink, maybe consider a healthier alternate like good old fashioned cold water combined with a quick exercise burst to enhance your energy naturally. Contact us to learn more about dental health and caring for your teeth.

Smoking Leaves Your Mouth Vulnerable To Disease

A new study asserts that smoking causes the body to turn on its own helpful bacteria, leaving smokers more vulnerable to disease.

Despite the routine brushing and flossing, a healthy person's mouth contains a lot of healthy bacteria. New research shows that the mouth of a smoker is a much more chaotic, unhealthy, and more susceptible to invasion by harmful bacteria.

As a whole, smokers, in comparison to nonsmokers, suffer from increased rates of oral diseases, particulary gum disease. This statistic creates a unique challenge for dentists, according to Purnima Kumar, assistant professor of periodontology at Ohio State University. She and her colleagues are involved in a multi-study investigation of the role the body's microbial communities play in preventing oral disease.

"The smoker's mouth kicks out the good bacteria, and the pathogens are called in," said Kumar. "So they're allowed to proliferate much more quickly than they would in a non-smoking environment."

The results suggest that dentists may have to offer more aggressive treatment for smokers and would have very good reason to suggest quitting smoking, Kumar said.

"A few hours after you're born, bacteria start forming communities called biofilms in your mouth," said Kumar. "Your body learns to live with them, because for most people, healthy biofilms keep the bad bacteria away."

She likens a healthy biofilm to a lush, green lawn of grass. "When you change the dynamics of what goes into the lawn, like too much water or too little fertilizer," she said, "you get some of the grass dying, and weeds moving in." For smokers, the "weeds" are problem bacteria known to cause disease.

These factors have to impact how dentists deal with smokers. "It has to drive how we treat the smoking population," she said. "They need a more aggressive form of treatment, because even after a professional cleaning, they're still at a very high risk for getting these pathogens back in their mouths right away."

"Dentists don't often talk to their patients about smoking cessation," she continued. "These results show that dentists should take a really active role in helping patients to get the support they need to quit."

For Kumar, who is a practicing periodontist as well as a teaching professor, doing research has changed how she treats her patients. "I tell them about our studies, about the bacteria and the host response, and I say, 'Hey - I'm really scared for you.' Patients have been more willing to listen, and two actually quit."

Dentists Can Help Screen For Chronic Illnesses

Almost 20 million Americans visit a dentist annually, but not a general healthcare physician, according to an NYU study published in the American Journal of Public Health.

So what does this finding mean to researchers? Dentists can potentially play a crucial role as health care practitioners by identifying systemic diseases which would otherwise go undetected in a significant portion of the U.S. population.

"For these and other individuals, dental professionals are in a key position to assess and detect oral signs and symptoms of systemic health disorders that may otherwise go unnoticed, and to refer patients for follow-up care," said Dr. Shiela Strauss, an associate professor of nursing at the NYU College of Nursing and co-director of the statistics and data management core for NYU's Colleges of Nursing and Dentistry.

During the process of a standard dental examination, dentists and dental hygienists, as trained healthcare providers, could take a patient's health history, check blood pressure, and use direct clinical observation and X-rays to detect risk for systemic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

If dentists began to assist in these types of basic screenings, it could make a significant impact in proper treatment, early detection and prevention for many chronic illnesses. If you are in need of a dental exam, contact Kurz Family Dentistry in Dacula, GA.
